Crowns: strengthening and enhancing a tooth

A crown is a cap placed over a weakened or damaged tooth. It provides extra strength and protects the underlying tooth, while restoring a natural shape and colour.

Crowns are made from durable materials and are custom-crafted to match your teeth. This ensures they fit well with the surrounding teeth and feel like having a healthy natural tooth again.

When is a crown needed

A crown is often recommended for large fillings, a cracked tooth, after root canal treatment, or in cases of severe wear. If the shape or colour differs significantly, a crown can also be an attractive solution.

  • Strengthening a weakened tooth
  • Restoring natural shape and colour
  • Better distribution of chewing forces
  • Durable solution for major restorations

Before placing a crown, the tooth is carefully prepared and shaped. We then take a precise impression or scan, which the dental laboratory uses to fabricate the crown. Until the final crown is ready, you will receive a temporary restoration.

At placement, we check the fit, bite and colour. Afterwards, you will receive instructions on cleaning around the crown. With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a crown can function well for many years.

Frequently asked questions about crowns

At first, the crown may feel slightly different, but most people adapt quickly. The crown is made to feel comfortable in your bite and to look natural.

With good care and regular check-ups, a crown can last for many years. Factors such as oral hygiene, teeth grinding and overall oral health play an important role.

The tooth is usually prepared under local anaesthesia, so you feel little to no pain during the procedure. Once the anaesthetic wears off, the tooth may be slightly sensitive for a short time, which usually settles quickly.

Minor adjustments to the shape can sometimes be made. If larger changes are needed, we will assess whether a new crown is a better option. We always discuss this together with you.

Brush the crowned tooth just like your other teeth and use aids such as floss or interdental brushes to keep the margins clean. During check-ups, we will provide additional tips when needed.
