Veneers: refining your smile

A veneer is a thin layer of composite or porcelain applied to the front surface of a tooth. It allows us to subtly correct minor misalignments, discolouration, small gaps, or chipped corners.

Veneers are custom-made in shape and colour to suit your mouth and face. The goal is a natural-looking smile, not an unnaturally white or identical set of teeth. During the consultation, we discuss what is realistic and most suitable for you.

When is a veneer suitable

Veneers are especially suitable for aesthetic improvements to the front teeth, such as discolouration, minor crookedness, damage or small gaps. For more extensive damage or heavy grinding, another solution—such as a crown—may sometimes be better.

  • Covers discolouration and minor imperfections
  • Corrects small misalignments and gaps
  • Custom result in colour and shape
  • Relatively minimal preparation compared to a crown

Depending on the type of veneer, the tooth is lightly prepared or sometimes only roughened. The veneer is then built up directly or fabricated by the laboratory. We show you in advance what you can roughly expect in terms of shape and colour.

With good oral hygiene and careful follow-up, veneers can last a long time. You will receive tips on diet and habits, for example if you grind your teeth or consume a lot of acidic foods and drinks, so we can protect your veneers as well as possible.

Frequently asked questions about veneers

Veneer placement is usually well tolerated. We sometimes use local anaesthesia if any preparation is needed or if you have sensitive teeth. Afterwards, there may be brief sensitivity, which typically settles quickly.

Composite veneers can discolour slightly over time, for example due to coffee, tea and smoking. Porcelain veneers generally maintain their colour better. During check-ups, we discuss which choices and habits are most suitable for you.

Veneers can generally be replaced or removed, but this always requires a new assessment of the tooth. We explain beforehand what changes to the tooth may be needed and what options you have in the long term.

In daily life you can eat normally, but it is wise not to bite very hard items too often with veneers, such as hard sweets or nuts with a hard shell. We will give you practical tips that fit your situation.

Brush twice a day with a soft brush and use aids to clean between the teeth. Avoid frequent use of highly abrasive toothpaste. During check-ups, we pay extra attention to the veneer margins.
